The announcement from Redmi comes just hours before the launch of Realme GT 3 with 240W fast charging at the MWC 2023 in Barcelona later today, which is the global variant of the Realme GT Neo 5 that supports up to 240W fast charging. According to Redmi’s translated post on China’s popular social media website Weibo, the new charging technology is named “300W Immortal Second Charger”, which suggests that it could be an alternative charging technology. The company also noted that this is not a completely new technology but a modification of the current fast charging technology available on the Redmi Note 12Pro+. “This is the 300W charging test of the Note 12 Pro+ magic version,” the post reads. In a recently shared video and a teaser image on Weibo, Xiaomi’s Redmi showcases its new 300W wired charger where the device used for testing is the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ handset with a 4,100mAh battery. During the demo, Redmi’s 300W wired charger takes less than 5 minutes to completely charge the phone to 100 per cent, as opposed to Realme’s GT 3 240W with 4,600mAh battery that takes around 10 minutes. Further, it took 2 minutes and 13 seconds to charge the smartphone to 50 per cent, and only 43 seconds to charge the device to 10 per cent. As per the company’s official data, the peak power of the charger managed to reach up to 290W during the demo. Further, the power above 280W can last for 2 minutes to charge the smartphone up to 50%.
The battery is said to have powerful 15C cells (as opposed to the 10C cells in the Discovery Edition), which consist of new carbon materials for reduced thickness, and higher power density with a faster charge and discharge rate (via Engadget). It has a sandwich structure and a double-layer design to improve heat dissipation while making better use of internal space. Additionally, the charger is said to use the Double GaN technology with “more than 50 safety protections” built into the system in regard to the battery charging technology. Xiaomi has not disclosed when the 300W fast charging tech will be available for commercial use and in which smartphones.
